The flavors of Amorgos cuisine are characterized by potatoes and vinegar. The first specialty of the island is meat and potatoes, cooked in tomatoes and local herbs. A second food famous to Amorgos is tripe, prepared with a vinegar sauce. Both foods can be found at local festivals.
The food given to wedding guests (called Bonbonniere in Greek) is a sweet of sesame seeds and honey wrapped in lemon leaves.
You should not leave Amorgos without trying the Xerotigana, a wedding candy in Aegiali only, as well as the local honey and drinks. Rakomelo is a nice choice for drinking, a local liquor made with honey. Baked Raki is also a good beverage to warm up the cold winter nights, made with honey, raki, clove and sugar.Amorgian housewives still specialize in stuffed grape leaves (Giaprakia) and Pitaridia (eggless pasta boiled in milk). Also try Kefalotyri, a salty locally-made cheese, and Myzithra, a soft cheese similar to American cream cheese.
