Sifnos General Information - Map

Sifnos is a picturesque island in the western Cyclades, located between Serifos and Kimolos islands. It is well known for its traditions, hospitality and rich variety of cuisine. The name “Sifnos“, comes from the son of Atticus, the hero Sounio. Some say the name "Sifnos" means empty, because of existing underground mines on the island, once filled with gold and other precious metals. Historically, other given names include "Akys," "Merope," “Sifano" and “Sifanto".

Even though tourism has developed in recent years, Sifnos remains faithful to the preservation of its traditions and unique character of its people, which can be seen from the first impression. The hospitality and kindness of its people, shining white houses, 227 picturesque churches , 57 ancient towers,  and even the Venetian dovecotes, historic monuments and traditional festivals are all important elements which bring visitors back year after year. Do not forget the valuable contribution of Sifnians both in letters and science, as well as the culinary arts,  bringing up world-famous Chef, Nicholas Tselementes, as one of Greece‘s best.

The first thing to notice upon reaching Sifnos is the charming bay which is the island's port. The settlement of Kamares is divided between the mountain slopes which form the bay and one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. To the right of the harbor find the main settlement, and on the left side of the harbor see the district of Saint Marina.

From Kamares, the next village to reach is the capital of the island since 1836, Apollonia. Built amphitheatrically into the hills, the capital is joined by three settlements: Exambela, Katavati and Pano Petali. These villages are connected by the main road, as well as beautiful stone footpaths worthy of a leisurely stroll.

Adjacent to Apollonia, discover the second largest town of Sifnos, Artemonas. This is the real gem of the island, with Venetian mansions of neoclassical architecture, flower gardens and well-kept courtyards. The beautiful narrow streets provide a window to everyday Greek village life, with occasional opportunities to experience the true hospitality and simplicity of its residents.

Not to be missed is the medieval settlement of Kastro, built upon an ancient fortified city inhabited since ancient times. It was Sifnos’ first capital until 1836.
